Memcached is a widely used in-memory caching system used by many internet applications as a means of limiting traffic to core data stores, such as RDBM Systems. While a naive integration of memcached into an internet application is easy, there are many pitfalls that are non-obvious.

This presentation will:

(1) describe basic memcached usage

(2) show the naive integration into an application

(3) demonstrate how that integration can cause data corruption issues, locking issues, latency, and a very grumpy dba.

The scenarios shown come from industry experience, application failures, and the real world learning that comes from such. This session is for those that have experience with memcached and want to know more about it, but is also accessible to the general programming community.

This is a two-person presentation, demonstrating both an engineering and a management view on the issues presented.
