Imagine finishing a new release of your software, and at the click of a button it builds for multiple architectures and notifies your users that updates are available. That dream becomes reality when you leverage Ubuntu’s Launchpad, a web site supporting software development. This capability has been added by the most recent and unique feature of Launchpad, the PPA, “Personal Package Archive”. This talk will focus on the basics of creating your own PPA, from the easy part, where you become an “Ubuntero”, to the challenging, where you create a Debian source package of your software, to the fun, when you use the dput tool to send your latest source deb up to the server. Then sit back and bask in the comfort of knowing that the coming of your new release has been trumpeted to the far ends of the world through the magic of the standard Ubuntu Update Manager software. Special attention will be paid to building Debian source packages, as that is the most challenging part of distributing your software with Launchpad’s PPAs. Attention will also be given to distributing custom branches of existing open source projects.

A little publicity for my talk. I have promised weird slipshod diagrams and angry drunken dwarves! Let’s see if I can deliver.
