Using Open Source to Speed Multi-source Development - Issues and Benefits

Moderated by: Peter Vescuso
Location: Ballroom A8

Open source software is enabling a fundamental re-alignment of development economics – enabling faster, more cost-effective product development and time-to-market. Industry analysts report that as much as 80 percent of new software products contain some open source code, raising issues for the protection of intellectual property.

Development organizations have done little to gear up for the challenges of using open source. Mixing open source code, which has license, pedigree and security issues, with home grown and commercial code creates a new set of challenges. When managed poorly, reuse of open source with proprietary and third party code can introduce significant issues: security vulnerabilities, hidden license obligations, regulatory violations, unsupported open source, and version proliferation. These issues can lead to significant risks and financial consequences for organizations that do not address them proactively. The good news is advanced management platforms are available to harness the power of open source while managing the associated challenges, while seamlessly integrating with existing tools and processes.

Attendees will discuss new technologies and approaches that address the unique challenges that arise when development organizations use open source components “at scale.” We will cover best practices for addressing the management, licensing and security issues associated with open source in a typical development environment.
