Cloud Computing with Persistent Data: Pushing the Envelope of Amazon Web Services

KnowledgeTreeLive is a novel SaaS document management application built using the Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud, Amazon’s Simple Storage Service and rPath’s Virtual Appliance technologies. KnowledgeTreeLive leverages the popular open source KnowledgeTree application. The combination of cloud computing, virtual appliances, and other open source technologies allowed for the speedy implementation of the on-demand offering, without requiring significant changes to the KnowledgeTree architecture and in a very cost and resource effective manner.

Although the low cost and flexibility of Amazon Web Services Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) offer many advantages over a traditional data center model, there are some obstacles unique to EC2 that need to be overcome. Two of the most pressing problems are the lack of persistent storage on the EC2 instances and control over public facing IP addresses.

Bauer will show how they use a combination of MySQL replication and another Amazon Web Service, Simple Storage Solution (S3), to manage persistence in the cloud, as well as how they used a combination of memcache and round robin DNS to solve the dynamic IP and load balancing challenges.

Also discussed is how they used Simple Queue Service and SimpleDB to contextualize and co-ordinate their instances, essentially forming the glue that holds their cloud together.

Finally. Bauer will outline how he used rPath’s virtual appliances to maintain synchronization between the live servers and the Xen domU images (Amazon Machine Images or AMI). The AMIs are user-provided images of servers that are booted on issuing a request to EC2.

The talk will be targeted at users who have a solid background in web application hosting environments on the Apache/MySQL/PHP stack (or similar) but are still new to utilizing Amazon Web Services.

Jean-Paul is a systems engineer at KnowledgeTree where he is responsible for looking after the ongoing architecture and development of the KnowledgeTreeLive software as a service application.

He has been involved in deploying and architecting open source systems for the past eight years. When not looking for ways to leverage open source technologies for businesses, he spends his time looking for innovative ways to utilize ICT’s for education. He was awarded the Youth and ICT Award for these endeavors at the World Summit on the
Information Society in 2005.
