Automating Open Source Governance Using Free Tools and Data

Location: D137 Level: Intermediate

(3.67, 3 ratings)

Be it large enterprises or small businesses, you will be hard pressed to find an organization that does not use free and open source software (FOSS) today. However, if you ask these organizations for details like how much FOSS they use, most used projects, etc., the answers are highly likely to be inaccurate.

Open source governance is an emerging discipline that refers to the policies, processes, and tools that help organizations manage their use and contribution to FOSS. This talk will concentrate on two major aspects of open source governance:

  1. The tools that can make open source governance easier and more automated.
  2. The data implications that accompany the adoption of these tools.

The tools we will focus on will include the following free ones:

  • OSSDiscovery
  • FOSSology
  • Ohloh.net
  • Open source census
  • FOSSBazaar

Drawing heavily from work done at HP as well as VMware, we will provide some practical insights into how these can be integrated with existing infrastructure applications like bugzilla, build farms, asset management systems, etc., to automate governance.

The data aspect of the talk will identify the significant challenges that have prevented predecessors like OpenBRR from succeeding. We will identify the issues facing both the providers and consumers of objective meta data regarding FOSS and will offer suggestions on how to covert these into mutually beneficial opportunities.
