Across parts of Europe and the United States, there is clear evidence of both unemployment and underemployment, partially an effect of technical displacement: machines and software now do the jobs people used to do.

Under capitalism, owners always look to increase profit by reducing labor costs, either directly as attacks on labor or via automation. This, however, leads to underemployment, which means nobody can afford to buy the goods and services the capitalist produces. This is what Marx called an inherent contradiction of capitalism—a contradiction that would one day lead to its replacement by socialism.

Jamie Dobson explores the inherent contradictions of capitalism by looking back in history at one of the most disruptive technologies of all—the windmill—before applying these lessons to our current moment, explaining that software is eating not only the world but capitalism too, from the inside out.
