Who is this presentation for?

  • Software engineers and DevOps engineers

Prerequisite knowledge

  • A working knowledge of a cloud deployment target (Kubernetes, AWS, GCP, etc.) and how to manually deploy containers or base images (like AMIs) to the corresponding infrastructure
  • Familiarity with packaging artifacts and a CI tool like Jenkins (useful but not required)

Materials or downloads needed in advance

  • A laptop with Google Chrome installed

What you'll learn

  • Understand Netflix’s application-centric model and multicloud deployment
  • Learn how Spinnaker interacts with third-party tools
  • Discover best practices to safely deploy new code

Description

Spinnaker is an open source, multicloud continuous delivery platform built by Netflix in partnership with Google, Microsoft, and others. At Netflix, Spinnaker powers over 4,000 deployments a day. With Spinnaker, you can easily automate complex delivery processes into repeatable pipelines that enable rapid deployments with confidence.

Emily Burns, Jeyrs Chabu, and Asher Feldman walk you through building continuous delivery pipelines for deploying and promoting code across cloud virtual machines and containers using Spinnaker. You’ll start with a Git repository and build repeatable pipelines that take code through packaging, deploying, promoting, and rollbacks.

Topics include:

  • Netflix’s application-centric model for managing cloud resources
  • Multicloud deployment to cloud VMs and Kubernetes
  • How Spinnaker interacts with third-party tools like Jenkins and the Docker Registry
  • Pipeline triggers, stages, and notifications
  • Best practices to safely deploy new code by leveraging Spinnaker features like traffic guards, deployment windows, rollbacks, and automated canary analysis
