Description

Tara Manicsic has killed a lot of plants. She loves building electronics projects. Non sequitur? No way. In order to stop the flora massacre, Tara walks you through coding out a system for your plants that updates you on light and moisture levels using a Tessel board and React UI and demonstrates how to retrieve and utilize sensor data.

You’ll code up the sensors using the Tessel open source libraries and microcontroller. Once the data is being sent to your database, you’ll spin up the UI using Create React App and combine the plant database and the sensor database. Then you’ll set up push notifications to remind you NOT to kill plants.

This project is specific to plants, but the concept of connecting static information and dynamic data from sensors into a handy web app can be applied to any number of use cases. Come ready to code—and ready to save some plants from imminent demise.

Tara Manicsic is a developer advocate at Progress. A lifelong student, teacher, and maker, she has spent the majority of her career using JavaScript to create applications on both the backend and frontend. In her free time, she works in her community to educate and learn from other developers. Tara launched the Cincinnati chapter of Women Who Code and cochairs the Cincinnati branch of NodeSchool.
