First Impressions (the value of the "noob")

Let’s give impostor syndrome the benefit of the doubt, and posit that you really know nothing about that new project’s code. There’s an essential area in which the project needs you MORE than it needs an established contributor!

Reputation and first impressions have a huge impact on open source projects’ ability to recruit and retain new contributors. The project’s experts, who already know what the docs and tutorials “should” look like and can configure the code in their sleep, are among the worst people to perform quality control on materials targeted at newbies.

Addressed to the newbie but a useful tool for anyone who mentors, this talk will outline the exact steps that a newcomer can take to help a project improve its first impressions.
