Did MySQL query optimizer pick a poor query plan for your query? This session gives an account of tools and techniques that can be employed to narrow down and fix the problem. We’ll cover:

  • A walkthrough of MySQL optimizer, available query execution strategies and how they are composed to query plans
  • How query plan is reflected in the EXPLAIN output and what other information can be extracted from EXPLAIN [EXTENDED|CONDITIONS|PARTITIONS]
  • How one can use MySQL counters or statistics or dtrace probes to find out what did the optimizer get wrong when planning the query
  • How to determine if running ANALYZE TABLE will help
  • How you can affect the query plan choice with hints, switches and other means

Sergey Petrunia

Sergey Petrunia is a member of MySQL Query Optimizer team. He has implemented query optimizer features like index_merge access, partition pruning, semi-join subquery optimizations, and numerous smaller improvements.
