PostgreSQL has much to offer today’s developers who has been charged with creating applications for Web, embedded, data warehousing, OLTP, geo-spatial, and other environments. Developers will find many flexible options at their disposal with PostgreSQL no matter what language or IDE they choose to use. This session will give developers a quick tour of the development side of PostgreSQL so they have a solid understanding of what’s available to them and why they should look at PostgreSQL for their next application development project. Topics covered include:

  • How to create stored procedures and functions in Java, Ruby, C, Python, Perl, and other development languages that run within PostgreSQL
  • Using PostgreSQL code debuggers, SQL diagnostics, and other community supplied troubleshooting aids
  • Advanced SQL support in PostgreSQL
  • Geo-spatial development in PostgreSQL
  • How to use free PostgreSQL supplied middleware to create architectures that support automatic load balancing and failover
  • How to use PostgreSQL-supplied connectors and drivers

Robin Schumacher


Robin Schumacher is director of product strategy for EnterpriseDB. Prior to
EnterpriseDB, Robin was the director of product management for MySQL and the
VP of product management for Embarcadero Technologies. He is the author of
three books on database performance, was the database software reviewer for
Intelligent Enterprise and Data Management Review, has authored numerous
articles on database design and performance, and has 15 years experience
working with and designing database management systems.

Bruce Momjian


Bruce Momjian has been involved with open source since 1991 and has contributed to many open source projects. He is a co-founder of the PostgreSQL Global Development Group and has worked on Postgres since 1996. Bruce is also the author of PostgreSQL: Introduction and Concepts, published by Addison-Wesley. Before joining EnterpriseDB, Bruce was employed by Software Research Associates Open Source Solutions (SRA OSS) in their Postgres support division. Previously, he was vice president of database development at Great Bridge LLC, another Postgres support company. Bruce is a frequent speaker at open source conferences around the world.
