While MySQL Cluster is perhaps best known as the high available real time storage engine for MySQL Server, it is a fully functional transactional database in its own right. Based on a distributed shared nothing and transactional key-value store no SQL is required to access the data. Million real time operations per second can be executed directly on the underlying MySQL Cluster with a simple set of functions. In parallel SQL, LDAP or other access methods can still be used to provide data management services to a broad range of applications. A new native Java connector ClusterJ and an additional OpenJPA plugin map Java objects to the highly available data store and allow 10x faster operations by avoiding the usual SQL layer.

Bernhard Ocklin, MySQL Cluster Engineering Manager responsible for the team of MySQL Cluster developers, joined the MySQL organization as of September 2005. He first worked as a solution architect for high available database and cluster solutions and is now responsible for MySQL Cluster development at Sun. To his credit, Bernhard has designed and programmed data mining software in addition to writing a database core prior to using MySQL databases. The outcome of such work has proven extremely useful in big scale data processing, i.e., for fraud detection at the world’s largest derivatives exchange.
