MySQL dominates many OLTP environments due to application support, high transaction rates, and low connection overhead. PostgreSQL has a powerful extension mechanism that offers great flexibility, a powerful query language, a robust type system, and a cost-based optimizer that can efficiently execute sophisticated queries.

It’s possible to take advantage of both systems by using MySQL to record transactions, then consolidating data from multiple MySQL-based applications into PostgreSQL while checking for inconsistencies. Then, you can run cross-application analytics efficiently and have confidence in the result.
