While much of the focus of privacy fears is on newer internet applications, it’s important to remember the amount of private data – where you shop, what you bought, where you were when you bought it, how much you spend – that is held by credit card companies and other financial intermediaries. Yet we’ve become comfortable enough with those companies’ ability to safeguard our data to trade off possible privacy breaches against the clear benefits of giving up our privacy. We’ll talk with PayPal Vice President of platform, mobile and new ventures, Osama Bedier, about how Paypal uses customer data to assess credit risk, how they safeguard the data, and how our systems for providing consumer credit are also a kind of identity credential that might just unlock some of the thorniest problems for today’s internet.
