Gideon Lichfield

The Economist online

Gideon Lichfield is the deputy editor of The Economist online. He
has worked for the magazine since 1996, first as a science and
technology writer, and then as its correspondent in Mexico City,
Moscow and Jerusalem, before moving to New York City in 2009. In his
current role he is responsible for innovation across the The
Economist’s offerings online and participates in formulating its
digital strategy.

Susie Adams is the Chief Technology Officer for Microsoft Federal’s Civilian business. She has over 25 years experience in IT and Computer Science and has held numerous leadership positions at Microsoft as well as several Washington area IT consulting organizations. In her present role she is responsible for managing all technical planning and IT decisions for a $600 million dollar business. Susie is noted for her leadership in standing up Microsoft’s Technology Center for the Washington DC region and is an accomplished author on the topics of IT Integration and Web development. Her most recent a book is on the development of standards based Office Business Applications. Susie is a graduate George Mason University.

IBM Federal

Dave McQueeney is the chief technology officer for IBM’s US federal
government unit. His team works with IBM’s federal clients and IBM’s
federal system integrator partners to provide technical leadership
across the domain of enterprise systems technology and architecture.

McQueeney’s background covers a wide range of disciplines ranging from
solid state physics, to high-speed interconnect design, to distributed
software development tools, to government-specific industry solutions.
He has spent half of his career as a researcher and research executive,
and half in IBM’s customer-facing units including global sales and
distribution, acting as the global government solutions general manager
and leader of the Federal Systems Integration services unit.

Prior to joining IBM’s Federal team, McQueeney led the IBM global
services intellectual property and global competencies team. He
developed and deployed the business and technical strategies,
methodologies, professions, and intellectual property licensing
strategies that maximized the creation of business value for IBM’s

Throughout his career, McQueeney has driven strong connections between
IBM research and the other units of IBM, most recently IBM global
services. He was recognized by Consulting Magazine as one of the top 25
consultants for 2002, citing his work to make the innovations of IBM
research directly available to customers via IBM’s Business Consulting

He has held a number of significant positions in IBM research, including
director of the IBM Zurich research laboratory, vice president of
communication technology, and vice president of technical strategy and
worldwide operations.

McQueeney has published a wide range of papers ranging from liquid
helium physics, advanced electronic packaging, high-speed interconnects,
and the evolution of research in the commercial environment.

He began at IBM in the research division in 1988. McQueeney earned an
M.S. and Ph.D. in solid-state physics from Cornell University, and an
A.B. in physics from Dartmouth College.

McQueeney was recognized as one of the “Fed 100” top leaders in the
federal community for 2006 by Federal Computer Week magazine.

Adobe Systems Incorporated

Rob Pinkerton is the Director of Government Solutions for Adobe Systems where he has responsibility for Adobe’s enterprise go-to-market and solutions development strategies for global government.

Rob has 18 years experience in government and technology. He has worked in County, City, State and Federal levels of government including as an emergency medical response technician in Virginia, a law clerk in the City of Baltimore and as Legislative Council in the United States Senate during the 104th-106th Congress. Prior to joining Adobe, Rob was Vice President of Product Management for LexisNexis’s Enterprise Data Fusion Product which was developed for U.S. intelligence and law enforcement agencies to perform complex data analysis. For 5 years, Rob worked for Siebel Systems (now part of Oracle Corp) as Director of the Global Public Sector product business where he was responsible for Siebel’s second fastest growing product line and over 200 global public sector customers using enterprise case management and CRM.

Rob has an MBA from Carnegie Mellon University, a law degree from the University of Baltimore, a BA in economics, political science and history from the University of Richmond and has a patent for co-inventing a system for processing intelligence information (held by Oracle). Rob lives in Arlington, Virginia with his wife and 2 sons.

Clay Johnson

Clay Johnson is the author of The Information Diet: A Case for Conscious Consumption, and director of engagement for Expert Labs. He was the co-founder of Blue State Digital, the firm that built and managed Barack Obama’s online campaign for the presidency in 2008. After leaving Blue State, Johnson was the director of Sunlight Labs at the Sunlight Foundation, where he built an army of 2000 developers and designers to build open source tools to give people greater access to government data. He was awarded the Google/O’Reilly Open Source Organizer of the year in 2009, was one of Federal Computing Week’s Fed 100 in 2010, and won the CampaignTech Innovator award in 2011.

Johnson’s combination of experience as a developer, working in politics, entrepreneurism, and non-profit work gives him a unique perspective on media and culture. His life is dedicated to giving people greater access to the truth about what’s going on in their communities, their cities and their governments. He still claims that he learned all he needs to know from a two year tour as the late-shift waiter at Waffle House in Atlanta, GA.
