Collaborating with Federal and Community Partners to Improve Access to HIV and New Media Information: Lessons Learned from

(2.00, 1 rating), a program of the Office of HIV/AIDS Policy in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), provides access to information about Federal domestic HIV programs, policies, and resources, through a website and a variety of new media channels. Working with agencies across the Federal government, HHS launched the website to help guide users to an online gateway of HIV prevention, testing, treatment, and research information. To streamline communication across the agencies contributing content on the site, convenes a monthly Federal HIV/AIDS Web Council with HIV experts and web content and communication representatives from agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institutes of Health, Food and Drug Administration, Housing and Urban Development, and many others. Among other things, the Council provides guidance on how best to communicate HIV information to the public. The Council is also collaborating to develop new tools such as a widget that will provide location information for Federally-funded HIV/AIDS services.

In addition to the website, the project uses new media tools such as a blog, social networking profiles (MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter), photo and video sharing sites (YouTube and Flickr), a new media toolkit, and national webinars to extend the reach of Federal HIV information to diverse online spaces where people are already spending time. also uses new media to engage in dialogue with public health leaders from Federal agencies and community-based organizations about best practices for new media use in health communication. In this role provides technical assistance to other Federal agencies and community partners wanting to use new media tools in their HIV work. shares their and their partners’ new media lessons learned through platforms such as the blog and a related podcast series.

In this presentation, Miguel Gomez, Director of, will highlight some of’s strategies for connecting, collaborating, and building community among Federal and community partners. He will address how this enhanced communication has encouraged a dialogue, nurtured collaborative partnerships, and led to the development of new initiatives.

Miguel Gomez is the Director of, a portal to all Federal domestic HIV/AIDS information and provides guidance on how HIV/AIDS programs can use new media tools. Mr. Gomez introduced podcasting on and also hosts a blog that showcases the use of new media for HIV prevention, testing, and treatment. Mr. Gomez has been working on HIV/AIDS issues since 1984 and has held positions with national AIDS organizations and the Federal government. He is the Office of the Secretary’s senior representative to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Web Council.
