Neighbors for Neighbors - Connecting Neighbors to Each Other and Government Resources

Government as a Partner

Neighbors for Neighbors, Inc., a Boston based volunteer run 501c3, in partnership with the City of Boston, has created neighborhood-centric community-generated social networks for Boston Neighborhoods. Serving as a soundboard for voices and a springboard for action, the networks connect neighbors to each other and government employees and make’s it possible for them discover collaborate, and organize around common interests like crime, social activities, and service projects.

While social media platforms such as facebook and twitter connect people who already know each other, Neighbors for Neighbors neighborhood-centric social networks facilitate two-way dialogue and collaborative relationships between constituents and government employees reduce barriers and increase trust, participation, and accelerate the collaborative problem solving process.

Because the networks serve many diverse needs and interests, our adoption and usage rates are strong. This allows both constituents and government employees to quickly reach and engage each other with minimal effort in a neutral space.

During our showcase we’ll demonstrate how three city departments, the Office of Neighborhood Services, The Boston Police Department, and Office Emergency Preparedness have leveraged our networks to increase awareness, participation and trust. Additionally, we’ll outline our long term goals of convening an International “Neighbor Movement” that can quickly and inexpensively be adopted into every city and town government.
