Learn Something New Every Day

I’ve often caught myself muttering “You learn something new every day!” after hearing an interesting tidbit of information here or there. But I wondered: do we in fact learn something new every day? And how much of that learning are we cognizant of? As a New Year’s resolution for 2013, I set about to find out, by keeping track of what I learned over the course of the year and tweeting the results.

There were only a few self-imposed rules: the learning had to be organic (I couldn’t just pull the top trending result off of reddit.com/r/todayilearned), and I needed to understand the topic well enough to be able to teach it to others.

During this talk, I’ll go over some of the most interesting things I learned over the course of the year (covering all areas of life, including but not limited to programming), as well as some of the lessons I learned from conducting the experiment itself.
