Awareness: Artistic Experiments in Revealing Invisible Networks

For the first time, ETech has called upon artists and interaction designers to participate in the first ETech Emerging Arts Fest to bridge the gap between perception and understanding. None of these artists and designers are simply “users” of technology. None of them follow the manuals diligently provided with each and every electronic gadget they buy. They would rather misuse and abuse technology. They hack, they de-code, they re-purpose and they are fast.

Over the past few years we have witnessed the rise to Superbuzzdom of concepts such as “data aesthetics”, “sustainability”, “eco-consciousness”, “networked communities”, etc. We might know what they mean but are we adequately equipped to see them when they are
right before our eyes?

The work of the artists included in the Emerging Arts Fest will hopefully provide ETech attendees with a viscerally stimulating space for dialogue, introspection and an enhanced sense of awareness.

Kati London is Vice President at Area/Code, which creates cross-media games and entertainment. London designs and develops opportunities for interacting with others – whether that be for people and plants, residents of Gaza City and Tel-Aviv or gamers playing tag with tiger sharks in the Great Barrier Reef. Her collaborative projects have been featured in the Museum of Science & Industry, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and the Design Museum of London. Régine Debatty (BE/DE) studied Classics in Belgium and England, worked as a teacher of Latin and ancient Greek, then moved to media, working as a documentary director for the Belgian national TV, as a reporter for the radio Onda Cero in Spain, then as a consultant for the MEDIA programme of the European Commission in Italy.

She writes about the intersection between art, design, and technology on her blog as well as on design and art magazines such as Art Review (UK) . She also curates art shows and speaks at conferences and festivals about the way artists, hackers, and interaction designers (mis)use technology.
