Prerequisite knowledge

This workshop is geared toward designers and developers of all types. Product managers and entrepreneurs will also find information of interest as they consider what it means to integrate voice with their product. No prior experience designing for voice is necessary.

Tanya Kraljic covers the fundamentals of voice design by way of voice-enabling an existing mobile interface. Participants will come away with an understanding of the technology underlying spoken language systems, the important aspects of the design process, design artifacts, critical visual and dialogue considerations, and how to design and develop a natural language understanding model. Tanya also covers newly published language design and development tools and their place in the process.

With the explosion of new interfaces in mobile and IoT technology over the past few years, voice has become a primary interaction method, propelling many designers, developers, and product owners to the forefront of the cutting-edge, but often unfamiliar, discipline of voice design and development. The goal of this workshop is to provide participants with the knowledge they need to both capitalize on the opportunities afforded by the latest voice technologies and anticipate and plan for whatever challenges emerge.

Topics include:

  • The range of experiences afforded by available speech technology
  • Components (ASR, NLU, dialogue, text-to-speech)
  • How to build a natural language model
  • Conception, design, and development of some common dialogue models (transactions, find/refine, navigation)
  • Personas and dialogue crafting
  • Self-service tools and client-server integration via SDKs and APIs
