The Honeycomb Action Bar: Front to Back

App Development Grand Ballroom B
Average rating: ****.
(4.50, 2 ratings)

The action bar is perhaps the most visible change in the UI introduced in Honeycomb. It formalizes a UI pattern recommended by Google in 2010 and makes it available to all applications. While simply arranging for the action bar to appear takes just XML attribute, there are many additional capabilities lying under the surface that your code can tap into.

If you have seen other applications add their own custom widgets, like search bars and breadcrumbs, to the action bar, this presentation will show you how. If you have noticed how some applications cause the action bar to shift into a “context mode” when something is selected, this presentation will demonstrate how that is done. If you have wondered how the action bar and fragments interact, or how to add tabs to the action bar, or how to just make it all go away, this presentation will explain the details.
