In the summer of 2010, Microsoft and Google announced the formation of the Web Performance Working Group. Since then, we’ve been hard at work developing interoperable interfaces to measure web application performance. In this session, we’ll discuss the problems we’re solving, the challenges we’re facing, what we’ve done and where we’re going.
Above the fold time (AFT) measures web page performance by applying heuristics to a video or filmstrip view of a page loading. It focuses on what the user sees while at the same time producing consistent results across multiple runs and different browsers. This presentation will cover (1) the motivation for AFT, (2) overview the algorithm, and (3) how to collect AFT on webpagetest.org.
In addition to existing Firefox/Firebug add-on, YSlow will be available for many browsers – Chrome, IE, Safari, Opera, as well as Mobile browsers and command-line. Please come join us to explore behind-the-scene techniques used to make this “universal” performance measurement tool possible, also find out how you can get involved in next-gen YSlow. There will be a quick sneak peak of upcoming features!
The first step in improving performance is measuring performance. The last few years have witnessed the birth of numerous performance tools including Firebug, YSlow, Page Speed, HttpWatch, Speed Tracer, dynaTrace, WebPagetest, Web Inspector, and Chrome Dev Tools. But none of these tools measure mobile performance. Although the offering for mobile performance tools is small, some do exist. Join Steve Souders as he shows what's available today for gaining visibility into mobile performance.
Program subject to refinement. All talks are 30 minutes (including 10 minutes of Q&A), with a 15 minute break at US-PDT: 10:10am (US-EDT: 1:00pm).
