We’re excited to launch the Strata Data Innovation Awards to recognize disruptive, innovative technologies in big data and data science, highlight data science as an increasing importance for companies, and showcase the highlights of the growing data community.
The nomination process was open to the entire data community and all entries were judged by the award committee, chaired by Strata program chairs Edd Dumbill and Alistair Croll.
The award for each category was presented to an organization, project, or individual who has made a significant innovation in the data field, and presented on October 25, 2012, during keynote presentatinos at Strata Conference + Hadoop World.
The categories and winners for the first Strata Data Innovation Awards are:
Edd Wilder-James is a technology analyst, writer, and entrepreneur based in California. He’s helping transform businesses with data as VP of strategy for Silicon Valley Data Science. Formerly Edd Dumbill, Edd was the founding program chair for the O’Reilly Strata conferences and chaired the Open Source Convention for six years. He was the founding editor of the peer-reviewed journal Big Data. A startup veteran, Edd was the founder and creator of the Expectnation conference-management system and a cofounder of the Pharmalicensing.com online intellectual-property exchange. An advocate and contributor to open source software, Edd has contributed to various projects such as Debian and GNOME and created the DOAP vocabulary for describing software projects. Edd has written four books including O’Reilly’s Learning Rails.
Alistair Croll is an entrepreneur with a background in web performance, analytics, cloud computing, and business strategy. In 2001, he cofounded Coradiant (acquired by BMC in 2011) and has since helped launch Rednod, CloudOps, Bitcurrent, Year One Labs, and several other early-stage companies. He works with startups on business acceleration and advises a number of larger companies on innovation and technology. A sought-after public speaker on data-driven innovation and the impact of technology on society, Alistair has founded and run a variety of conferences, including Cloud Connect, Bitnorth, and the International Startup Festival, and is the chair of O’Reilly’s Strata + Hadoop World conference. He has written several books on technology and business, including the best-selling Lean Analytics. Alistair tries to mitigate his chronic ADD by writing about far too many things at Solve For Interesting.
