Jon Gosier is a serial tech entrepreneur and venture capitalist working at the intersection of data science and design. Based in Philadelphia, Jon is also the cofounder of Predictive Pop (aka PredPop), a data company changing way the music industry monitors and monetizes music. Prior to PredPop, in his career as a data scientist, Jon spearheaded big data projects for various multinational organizations where tech platforms were used to serve millions of people in developing countries. During that time, his many innovations were deployed by Google, the US Department of State, the US Army, the United Nations, the Red Cross, FEMA, the government of Canada, and the Kenyan disaster-response organization Ushahidi. Jon is also a successful venture capitalist. After developing a successful model for inclusive investing that allowed middle-class individuals to invest in startups, Jon cofounded Third Cohort Capital with fellow alumni of the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program. Later, he founded a $20M venture fund, Cross Valley Capital, and became a venture partner at Rokk3r Labs.
Jon gained wide recognition for his 2014 TED talk on “Trickle-Down Techonomics,” which explored the unintended consequences of technical innovation and the responsibility innovators have to design products that yield better social outcomes in addition to great features. He was listed as one of the “New Faces of Black Leadership” by Time magazine in 2015 and has received similarly distinguished honors from Black Enterprise, Business Insider, IDEO, and the Economist. Jon has received numerous awards for his work, including the Knight News Challenge in 2011 and 2013, a Harvard Initiative for Global Health grant in 2010, and the TED Senior Fellowship. His many successes in the tech industry have included cofounding MetaLayer (a Comcast-backed big data startup), founding one of Africa’s most notable consultancies, Appfrica, and creating Abayima’s Open SIM Kit (a mobile solution that helps prevent interruption of communication services during crisis events).
