One of the first industries to invest heavily in Big Data analytics was financial services, where firms have been pushing the boundaries on speed and scale in dynamically processing large volumes of structured market data for the past twenty years to gain competitive advantage.
As more industries are deploying Big Data initiatives, and adding new software for batch processing to the technology stack, they are looking to other sectors, like the financial industry, for different sorts of tools to use for real-time, or close to real-time, analyses of big structured data.
Kdb+ is a relational, time-series and columnar database with a tightly integrated query language, widely utilized by financial institutions because of its ability to do complex tasks like joins, aggregations and consolidation on billions of streaming, real-time and historical records.
In this talk we will also demonstrate how kdb+ can be used with visualization tools on vast amounts of data. When powered by kdb+, results can unfold as quickly as you can type a question.

Fintan is responsible for Kx sales engineering globally. An expert in developing database analytic systems, Fintan joined Kx in 2012 after having worked extensively with quantitative teams at a variety of Wall Street investment banks, hedge funds, and trading shops building high-performance Big Data applications. After beginning his career with First Derivatives, a global financial technology consultancy based in Northern Ireland, he moved to the U.S., where he worked at Nomura, Barclays Capital, and other investment banks. Fintan is a graduate of Trinity College in Dublin with a specialization in Computing and Microelectronic Engineering.
Doug specializes in the research and development of user interface designs and advanced visualization solutions for complex systems.
He has over 25 years of experience in producing and/or managing the development of award-winning content, visual design, user experience design and instructional design for organizations such as Cognos, IBM, Department of National Defence, Department of Finance, Secretary of State, Nortel Networks, OTI, Carleton University, and Honeywell Information Systems.
He holds numerous design patents. Most notably, he is a co-inventor of the visual language for iLog’s Telecom Graphics Objects (TGO) product – the defacto visual standard in telecommunications management user interfaces.
Doug holds a B.F.A in Communications Design. He teaches graphic design part-time at Online-Learning.com and is a regular guest lecturer at Carleton University’s Human Oriented Technology (HOT) Lab.
