The existential questions about open source are no longer a concern. Most major enterprises consume open source software, and some are major contributors. Trillions of dollars in market capitalization are building businesses consuming open source and there have been billion dollar businesses built around producing, packaging and supporting open source.
What does it take to build a business around an open source project?
There is no-one-size-fits-all formulaic solution to this problem and copying the previous patterns of success does not always work out according to plans and projections.
This talk is an attempt to present common patterns of success and failure in context with known examples and thought experiments, beginning with the history of open source business up to now.
Andrew has been a consumer and contributor to open source for many years. He is always up for an adventure with a broad background contributing to technology and business efforts. As a co-founder at Puppet Labs, followed by working in and around the CloudStack and OpenStack ecosystems, he gained a lot of perspective on building open source businesses and communities. Sometimes he has been known to talk about devops and organizational learning. Andrew recently joined Pivotal, starting another open source business adventure focused on Cloud Foundry.
