The trend towards the Internet of Things – combining mobile devices, small embedded electronics, prototyping platforms like Arduino, and realtime data feeds – has big implications for bandwidth, data and connectivity. The MQTT protocol has been published in the open for a long time, and there are now many solid implementations including the Eclipse Paho project. We’ll take a look at what the protocol is, why it is really useful for constrained environments, and discuss how, where and when to use it.
