Cloud computing promises to forever change the economics of information technology. Yet, because ownership of hardware resources may end up in the hands of fewer and fewer entities, it also changes the economics of open source software.
James Urquhart, author of “The Wisdom of Clouds”, a blog on the CNET blog network, and one of the 10 most influential people in cloud computing according to MIT Technology Review, will explore the ways in which cloud computing may evolve, both technically and from a market perspective.
Understanding how the various possible outcomes effect open source delivery and business models will allow open source projects to choose their optimal packaging, marketing and business models. Urquhart will help attendees understand why some models are better than others for open source software.

James Urquhart manages cloud computing infrastructure strategy for the Server Provider Systems Unit of Cisco Systems. Named one of the ten most influential people in cloud computing by the MIT Technology Review, and author of the popular C|NET Blog Network blog, The Wisdom of Clouds, Mr. Urquhart brings a deep understanding of these disruptive technologies and the business opportunities they afford.
Mr. Urquhart is a seasoned field technologist with almost 20 years of experience in distributed systems development and deployment, focusing on service-oriented architectures, cloud computing, and virtualization. Prior to joining Cisco, Mr. Urquhart held leadership roles at Forte Software, Sun Microsystems, and utility computing infrastructure vendor Cassatt Corporation.
Mr. Urquhart graduated from Macalester College with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Physics.
