In the past year, Songbird has matured into a desktop media player platform allowing for rich tight media integration between your desktop and the web. Capitalising on the Open Web and semantic APIs, developers are building add-ons for Songbird that leverage different websites’ APIs to bridge the user from their local media collections to the vast amounts of media on the web.
Songbird, being built on the Firefox & XULRunner platform, leverages the amazing work of the Mozilla community to build an open and semantic web-friendly “web player”, combining a web browser & a desktop media player. By providing open APIs for developers to build extensions on, developers can create media web mashups that extend the user beyond simply their portable MP3 player and their desktop to practically anything available on the web.
I am a software developer for the Songbird application built on the Mozilla platform. I have worked on Mozilla products for almost 4 years including Flock, and Netscape.
